How is muscle spasm treated?

The good news is there are many treatments for muscle spasm that is associated with acute painful conditions.

Rest, physical therapy, relaxation such as meditation and yoga, massage and chiropractic therapies, and acupuncture are often used to relieve painful muscle spasm.

Your doctor also may recommend medicines to treat your muscle spasm and relieve the pain. These may include:

  • Over-the-counter medicines like aspirin and ibuprofen (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs)
  • Prescription muscle relaxers — also known as skeletal muscle relaxants — which are often used in combination with rest and physical therapy. Muscle relaxers ease tightening in the muscle to reduce discomfort and pain caused by muscle spasm
  • Steroids
  • Prescription pain medicines
